The Controversy of Identity Politics in the 2024 General Election
Thesis
General Election or known as "Pemilihan Umum"
(Pemilu) is the implementation of the most votes cast for the election of the
president. In my opinion, the 2024 general election is filled with excessive
drama and gimmicks. Even some candidates use religion as a medium for
campaigning. Using religion as a medium for campaigning is part of identity
politics.
Argument 1
Firstly, there is candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo, who
appeared in a Maghrib call to prayer advertisement broadcast on one of the
Indonesian TV stations. Ganjar Pranowo has never done anything like this
before, but because of the election, he is engaging in identity politics. In my
opinion, the call to prayer advertisement should not be used as a campaign
medium.
Argument 2
Secondly, in addition to candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo,
engaging in identity politics and using religion as a medium for campaigning,
candidate number 1, Anies Baswedan along with his deputy Abdul Muhaimin
Iskandar, or better known as Cak Imin, are even worse in engaging in identity
politics. They use "sholawatan" (Islamic religious songs) with
altered lyrics for campaigning. There is even a circulating video of 4 PKB
cadre members simultaneously reciting the call to prayer from 4 different
directions.
Argument 3
Thirdly, this identity politics should be reduced
immediately, as it can cause discrimination. This can worsen tensions during
the election and exacerbate divisions in society. In my opinion, campaigning
does not have to be with religion, it can also be with the vision and mission
that the candidates offer.
Conclusion
Both candidates use religion as a medium for campaigning and
they also engage in identity politics. Personally, I disagree with using
religion as a medium for campaigning. They should be able to campaign without
using religion as a medium for campaigning.
